El Maestro Dj Peter
Tango traditional

El Maestro Dj Peter  .

Most of my turn is Classic Tango, ranging from the 1920s to the 1970s, but also Modern Tango and Nuevo. (Sometimes alternated with nice different music (non) or a little neo). But in this case the theme is: Classic.
The Salon of Milonga is determined by the atmosphere and the dancers, I try to respond to that. High priority is the quality of the music. For this I use all kinds of tools and software, so that the music sounds as original as possible again, as in the past.
To visualize the content of the music I project images (Tango Visuals) via a beamer. Making tandas is a time-consuming activity, before 4 songs have one atmosphere, a good build-up in speed, for example, an initial and an end piece, and especially (preferably) one timbre.

A tanda is actually a kind of symphony … in which the people dance through in a flowing movement .. (Lesser-known numbers get attention because of this .. the tanda does not just consist of “toppers”).
Also “cortinas” are important, specially made and matching the atmosphere, usually soft in structure, to get a nice transition ..
I myself have always been involved with music, classical guitar and bass in a jazz / salsa ensemble. I dance the Argentinian tango myself and have collected a lot of tango music.
In recent years, this hobby has grown to expand and refine the collection and turning it into salons and milongas

DJ Peter
– a question of taste

Origin: Dutch

Rank your favourite music style when playing:

Most Classic Tango and Nuevo Tango.. sometimes with Non (Oriental) and a little bit Neo Tango.

Are you dancing yourself?

Which year did you start to Dj?

What was the trigger that made you start DJing?
I already collected this music for 20 years.. and like to make music and multimedia projections, in the same way I did with architecture.

What is the main quality a DJ needs to have from your point of view?
The best sound- quality of the music, equal sound-color.. and listening to the dancers. Also variation in sound and rithm.

About cortinas: how long, why and kind of music?
Cortina’s: 25 sec. and almost jazzy of classical with sounds from the wind, the sea, water and birds etc.

What is your playlist system? Always the same or do you adjust it; when and why?
I make a list of fine cortina’s.. the fundament.. and start with filling it with music, while looking at the people, the atmosphere.

Somebody comes to the Dj booth and asks you to play a song. Your answer?
Always.. I like to play music requests and try to put it in a good tanda.

What would be your last song you played on a Tango Festival or Marathon?
Always a nice Cumparsita.. but best as the last number of a tanda. It can be a di Sarli, Sassone, but also a d’Arienzo, Caló, Varéla.. Nichèle , or modern etc.It depends how the evening ends. I never know what the last song will be.

If you would have a free wish, which Festival or Marathon would you like to play at?
A festival with dancers who also like the dynamic music, not only the songs you hear everywhere, but also the other orchestra’s from the old area.. going from the years 30 till 65.. with the accent in the years between 1937-1956.. for instance.
